These clips show a pahoehoe flow near Kalapana just after dawn. This flow broke out from the main tube about four miles upstream. It is now only one mile from the ocean in the coastal plain between Pulama Pali and the Pacific Ocean. The ocean entry plume shown is being fed by the remaining lava which remained in the main tube. If the surface flow continues, it will soon be flowing over the existing tube which is feeding the ocean entry.

HILO >> The varroa mite parasite that’s been killing bees across the country is spreading on the Big Island, threatening local fruit and macadamia nut industries.

The tiny, parasitic bug has escaped a quarantine area around Hilo and spread to Hamakua and Puna.

On the mainland, the varroa mite has destroyed more than half of some beekeepers’ hives and devastated most wild honeybee populations.

Mainland bees have also been hit by another illness called colony collapse disorder, which causes adult bees to abandon their hives.

Hawaii’s first varroa mite was found in 2007 on Oahu, where it is now widely established.

The mites breed in the bees’ hives, living off their blood. The mites weaken the bees, allowing other viruses and diseases to kill them.

HILO — A Puna man was given a four-page copy of the terms of his supervised release — and on the back were the names of 154 current and former Hawaii Community Correctional Center inmates, with Social Security numbers, system identification numbers, security class and scheduled released date — all confidential information.

The man, who requested anonymity, said he received the two-sided papers from the Department of Public Safety’s Hilo Intake Service Center, which serves as a liaison between the courts and the corrections system.
