xtri.com reports that the bicycle wheels that propelled the incredible two-time Ironman champion Chrissie Wellington in her outstanding racing season last year will help accelerate efforts to create a safe, livable and healthy Kona community. Wellington’s winning wheels were put up for auction in December to benefit PATH, Peoples Advocacy for Trails Hawaii, a 22 year old grass roots bicycle and pedestrian advocacy organization dedicated to connecting the people and places on Hawaii Island with pathways and bikeways.
“I am overjoyed that the auction of my HED race wheels has been able to support a worthy cause like PATH,” said Wellington. “Congratulations and a huge mahalo to the winning bidder. May the wheels bring you as much pleasure as they have brought me!”
PATH’s Executive Director, Laura Dierenfield said, “We are so grateful to Chrissie for her generous support of PATH efforts to create safe bicycling environments for children and families on Hawaii Island.”
The auction was put together by local triathlon and bike shop, Bike Works. “It is our pleasure to be able to connect Chrissie with PATH for such a great cause,” said shop owner Grant Miller. “The Bike Works crew truly appreciates Chrissie’s generosity and PATH’s dedication to bike advocacy and we will continue our efforts to bring together this kind of energy that makes Kona such a special place.”
